Terry Schulman discovered her talent and love for art almost by accident. It wasn’t until she was in her mid 30’s and on a budget that she felt compelled to throw some scraps of wood together and paint a barn to hang over her couch. As she stepped back to look at her first piece of art, she fell in love with the creative process.
With encouragement from her husband and a friend in the industry, Terry mustered the courage to approach a shop in Leesburg, Virginia and her foray into the world of art was birthed. Cutting her artistic teeth on everything from sculpting paper mache to painting signs, Terry found her main audience using the medium of fine architectural salvage, which she would locate in historic homes and barns throughout Loudoun County and the Blue Ridge mountains.
By employing acrylics with a primitive painting style along with her passion, she gave new life to these lost treasures. The idea of rebirth by resurrecting salvage paralleled the Gospel and what Jesus did for Terry; this is a constant source of inspiration and joy for her.
For nearly a decade, Terry sold her work through interior design boutiques and fine antique shops around Northern Virginia and has developed a following of art lovers and collectors ranging from everyday folks, local people of note to celebrities, such as Robert Duvall, who purchased one of Terry's paintings and then commissioned her for another.
In 2014 Terry's health declined with chronic Lyme disease and a host of other complications; her sicknesses landed Terry completely bedridden for a year and a half and in a wheelchair for three months, rendering her unable to paint. Years later, and after experiencing numerous other personal tragedies, Terry picked up her paintbrush again as she processed in detail those truly traumatic years of pain. Terry found that not only did her artwork become a very real catharsis but her inner healing manifested itself in much more detailed creations as she now explores her latest medium: Oils.
Painting from a new perspective, a God-given inspiration and encouragement from her closest friends, Terry's work displays a sense of inner peace, compassion for others and a love and awe of God's creation. She and her husband, David, have 3 adult children.
